Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC) is a derivative of cellulose, it is a water-soluble cellulose ether and carries a negative charge, categorizing it as an anionic compound.
At its core, PAC is a linear polysaccharide made up of β-(1,4)-linked glucose units. However, it also has carboxymethyl groups attached, leading to its anionic characteristics and water-solubility. Factors such as the degree of carboxymethyl substitution and the molecular weight of PAC influence its specific properties, including viscosity and solubility.
Known for its ability to create viscous solutions in both fresh and saltwater, PAC also boasts impressive heat stability. It is commonly found in oil and gas drilling fluids to decrease fluid loss. Furthermore, it is valued in various other sectors like food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and textiles due to its high viscosity and non-toxicity.
